Midnight Woodworking

Woodworking

Pub chairs – day nine

I had a chance to start finishing the chair last night so I applied the first coat of Tung oil. I decided to use tung oil because it a wipe-on finish that won’t run if you apply it correctly. I put 6 coats on Ian’s guitar and it turned out very nice. It is not pure tung oil, but a polymerised version. It soaks into the wood creating a hardened finish that starts below the surface. The more coats you apply the stronger and shinier it gets. I will probably apply half a dozen coats to give the chair a good durable protective surface.
