The final coat of polyurethane is dry on the tops, so I can peel off the masking and do my final assembly.
With the lower section of the table already assembled, I can start applying glue to the bottom of each column then after inserting each in place, I can apply glue to the top face as well.
After all four are done, I can lower the top carefully in place.
Everything aligns very well and I can add a clamp to each corner, to keep it pressed tightly while the glue dries.
I made an effort to orient the quarter-sawn face, of each leg, to the front and rear, so when I added the columns, I oriented them the same way. This creates some continuity. Most of the legs look as if they came from the same piece as the column above.
I was hard pressed to find enough clamps long enough to do all of the tables at once. I may need to buy a few more…
I allowed the glue to dry overnight and pulled the clamps the following morning. some of the clamps left a slightly duller patch in the new finish so I sanded back the tops and added a third coat of polyurethane. The extra finish will fix the dull spots and add one more layer of protection.
The tables are all done and ready to be delivered so that I have space for the next couple of pieces to be built.
I am not sure I enjoyed mass producing these tables but they were an interesting challenge. The most difficult part was figuring out how to create the flare at the ends of the legs and columns.
Everything seems to have worked out well in the end and I hope they will serve Holy Spirit church very well for may years to come.
