With the stain dry, I can prepare to put on a couple of coats of polyurethane. The only thing I really need to do for the first coat is sand the epoxy I coated the bowl with. Just a quick sanding with 400 grit paper gets it smooth and ready with small scratches that the polyurethane will cling better to.
I am using oil-based polyurethane so I will only need two coats. I start by spraying the bottom and the top with my HVLP sprayer.
Then I stand the fonts up onto a couple of triangular strips of wood so the bottom can dry with only four points of contact to sit on. I can then finish spraying the rest of the font.
After sitting overnight, I sand down the entire thing with 400 grit paper.
After carefully removing all of the dust, I can repeat the process of spraying again.
Since I have a few extra days before delivery, I decided to add a third coat to the top bowl area for added protection.
When they were dry, I buffed out the entire surface with brown paper to remove any dust nibs and leave a smooth surface behind.
I delivered the fonts to Holy Spirit church. They will be replacing the smaller, wall-mounted fonts that you see right above them.
I always enjoy visiting this church. They have the most unique crucifix.
