Turkey fan mount day-1
I started another project last night. The other two projects are waiting on hardware, so I started one more. I have a co-worker that hunts and likes to mount trophies. He asked me if I could make a mount for a turkey fan and beard. Yes, apparently some turkeys grow a beard, usually the males. I attached the pattern that I designed to meet his specs. It is a simple design, there is a large back piece that the fan mounts to, then a spacer with a notch for the beard, then a front plate to cover all the unattractive bits of the feathers. I rooted around my scrap pile for some walnut and came up with this ugly piece of sappy wood that was peeling badly. I planed it down 1/4″ till I got past all the peeling, then cleaned up the edges on the table saw. Next I cut that board in half so I had a front piece to match the visible portion of the back. I planed down another 4″ wide piece of scrap to join to it so I could make the back tall enough to support the fan. A 3/4″ x 2″ wide piece of scrap would act as a spacer. I cut the beard notch into the spacer and traced the bottom curve onto it. This will enable me to cut that curve with the face side down when it is glued up. With that done, I glued up the back piece and the front/spacer assembly. Hopefully I will be able to finish the project tonight if I get an hour or two in the shop. How did you get the beard to stay in the notch? Glue?
Yes, glue. More specifically,my friend used a quick set epoxy.
